Music of Who: The Bringers of War

You've seen the companion's leitmotifs and the Doctor's. Murray Gold doesn't stop there! Why should he? We have recurring villains in this crazy show and they each have their own music. Let's start with everyone's favourite: the Daleks.

In the aftermath of World War II western culture has spun many a story, novel, film loosely based on the Nazis. They are, after all, one of the most recognisable villains of recent history and one whose ideals we still strive to fight against through the aforementioned art forms. One of the least subtle symbols of Nazism would have to be George Lucas' Empire from Star Wars (Stormtroopers, hello! And, like, those are THE Nazi helmets).

In the 60s, Doctor Who created the Nazis of the universe: The Daleks. This seemingly invincible army with impenetrable armour and unmitigated hatred is defeated time and time again by The Doctor (whom they lovingly refer to as The Oncoming Storm). Arguably the cybermen are more ideologically nazi-ish in that they want everyone to be the same and take only the "good stock" to be "upgraded". But if you look back at the creator of the Daleks, you'll find one damn good Hitler impersonator.
Davros--or Mr. Cray, as I like to call him--first appeared in the old series during Tom Baker's run as the fourth Doctor. He is a weird little mutilated-looking dude in a space-wheelchair shaped like the skirt of a Dalek. He is also one hell of a convincing public speaker/lunatic. Like I said. Hitler. Move over, Darth Sidious!

Murray Gold attended music school, just like everyone else. So he knows which are the best composers to borrow from. Gustav Holst wrote an awesome piece called "The Planets" where each movement is named after a particular planet in our solar system. Mars: The Bringer of War is number one. As we all know, Mars is the Roman god of War. You see where I'm going with this, right? Take a listen to Mars first:

Now take a listen to the Dalek music. There's also some Uranus in there which is super cool. I LOVE THIS TRACK. Unfortunately, I don't know what the words are that the choir is singing. Maybe it's some crazy made up alien language. Definitely not German though... Enjoy!
