ComicCon: Meeting Your Idols and Baby's First Cosplay

Compared to some people I know, I was a bit late coming out of the nerd closet. I think I've always been one but I haven't really let my flag fly until recently. I always had an obsessive nature so when I found a TV show or movie or band that I liked I tended to become a super fan rather quickly. When I was 4 it was The Little Mermaid, when I was 11 it was the Spice Girls, when I was 14-18 it was The X-Files. Right now, as you may have noticed, it's Doctor Who.

This year I started to revisit the X-Files and found that I was appreciating it in a whole new way. Now that I'm 10 years older I react differently to certain scenes, understand characters better and I all around see, more than I did at 16, what a great show it really was. I'm not sure I understood while it was happening but Gillian Anderson and the character of Dana Scully whom she portrayed on the X-Files greatly influenced aspects of my own character and psychological development as a woman. For example, things that I find attractive on a woman (myself included) I owe to Scully-- suits, long nails, high heels. Mulder is also totally the kind of idiot I myself would chase around. When I heard the news that Gillian Anderson was coming to ComicCon in Montreal I got so excited I almost cried.

And today it happened! I got to see her! Very exciting and I have to say she was awesome. She's just a regular person, really. She doesn't try to impress people, she doesn't condescend, she's not phoney. It was great. It also made my day when someone asked her "How does it feel to look better now than you did in your twenties?". She really does, man.

Moving on from that fangirl rant: The rest of ComicCon was great. It was a lot bigger this year. There was a shit ton of cosplay and this year I actually participated. I rode the bus and metro all the way downtown in my River Song costume. I know I wasn't dressed in something as ostensibly nerd as a Stormtrooper but for me, this was a big step! One guy even complimented me on my costume and asked to take a picture of me with the TARDIS. Woot! Now I just need to find a Doctor to escort me next year... :)
