Music of Who part II: Martha and Donna

Martha and Donna definitely have the funnest leitmotifs. The rest of them, although beautiful, are melancholy as hell. I like Martha's because of its cute jazzy chromaticisms. The melody goes where you don't expect it to. A bit like Martha. At first we're all: Get out of the TARDIS, Martha! It's Rose's TARDIS! (to quote my good friend Christina). And then by the end of season 3 she's saved the day, basically lived through a horrible war all on her own, and matured in her feelings for the Doctor, ie she acknowledges that she needs to let go of him--that his feelings lie elsewhere. Here's the full track of Martha's theme, including its musical development, in all its synthesised glory:

Donna's theme is so incredibly Donna. It's super fun and sassy, just like her. By season 4 they've got an orchestra so Murray Gold just goes nuts and there's awesome music everywhere. Here it is, folks: our first theme with orchestra:

I'm adding this next bit at the request of my dear brother. This track is called the rueful fate of Donna Noble and starts playing towards the end of the season when "fateful" things happen to her. It starts with a slow harmonic progression of her original theme and then moves on:

  1. Interesting stuff. I'd like to know more about Donna's theme, though. My questions include:

-Is there any hint of it when they mention the Doctor-Donna?

-What plays when Donna is in trouble / having a sad moment where they clearly need to play a dramatic piece? (ie going away forever)

There may be more questions, but I'll wait until these are answered. >=D

  2. Haha Travis. Donna is always sad about something or other but mostly the music changes depending on the particular drama that's happening around her, and has less to do with her personally.

However! There is music that plays when some fateful things happen to her like the end of Turn Left and the end of Journey's End. I'll post it for you. But this isn't so much leitmotif. The track on the soundtrack is called "The Rueful fat of Donna Noble". This music was written for her fate.

No particular music for Doctor-Donna. BUT! And the next comment contains SPOILERS:

When Donna touches the hand, there's the Doctor's theme playing, and then when the new Doctor and Donna realise that he's like her, HER music starts playing. THEN rueful fate of Donna Noble music starts. Copy-paste FTW!

    Thanks for your nerd-like interest!
