Music of Who part III: The Doctor's theme cont.

--Contains minor SPOILERS pertaining to Tennant's regeneration--

***

So, remember the Doctor's theme that began in series one? (If you don't, look for it on my blog ---->) It continues right on through the end of series 4 and into the David Tennant year of specials, including, obviously, David's last episode. The End of Time part II is a long drawn-out farewell to David and to Russell Davies (who handed the showrunner reigns over to Steven Moffat in 2010). The 10th Doctor faces death very reluctantly. His last words as he begins to regenerate are "I don't want to go". And then he does. The light from his regeneration energy begins to take over his entire body and then positively explodes as he stands there inside the TARDIS. So, not only do we get rid of Tennant, but we get rid of the TARDIS control room whose design we had gotten used to seeing every week for 5 years. AND.... we get rid of the Doctor's theme. Boom.

In series 4 Murray Gold wrote this beautiful big build-upy track of the Doctor's theme, but this time, say it with me folks, WITH ORCHESTRA. We hear it, if memory serves, once at the end of series 4 when the Doctor is reunited with all his friends (aww *tear*). Here it is!

When the 10th Doctor regenerates into the 11th Doctor (Matt Smith) we hear the theme one last time-- Big, with choir etc. Gold takes the opportunity to say goodbye to this leitmotif as we say goodbye to one of the most beloved Doctors.

Soooooo the Doctor isn't the only one to regenerate; his music does too. Into this:

It's definitely cool to hear music associated with the Doctor that isn't as mournful or mysterious as the old theme. Even though Matt's Doctor goes through some serious stuff, in the end he's still an adventurer. That, more than anything, is what defines him.

Now, this isn't so much a leitmotif as it is the Doctor's "music". And we hear it all the time in the Moffat series. It's in 7 time; it's quirky; it's action-packed; it's my freaking ringtone. Gold has a lot of fun messing around with this music and morphing it and making variations and such. (The above video is actually more of a collage of these variations). Anyway, three years later, we're still using it. When Matt leaves next year I'm not sure what to expect musically, but I'm sure I won't be disappointed.
